Black-figure plaque that depicts Herakles' deification. It was unearthed during the 1882-1883 excavations to the east of the Parthenon.
Herakles is depicted in the background, behind the horses of the quadriga. He holds a club and bow and has his sword around his waist. The hero looks to the viewer’s left, towards the lost charioteer, possibly goddess Athena. To the horses’ right, Hermes turns to the left, watching the scene. The god wears chiton and himation and has a petasos on the head.
Over the horses’ heads, the painted inscription ΗΟ ΣΚΥΘΕΣ ΕΓΡΑΦΣΕΝ is the painter’s signature and reads “Skythes painted (it)”. The scene is framed by two narrow grooves painted black. The top of the plaque is pierced with two suspension holes.
